Remove AI Text Watermark

Whatever your content lives in (a paste buffer, a Word file, a PDF, an exported image), here is how to remove the AI text watermark and provenance metadata from it, format by format.

How do I remove an AI text watermark?

Paste the text into the cleaner and press Clean text, or upload a file to have its provenance metadata stripped. The tool removes zero-width characters, bidirectional controls, tag characters and homoglyph spaces, then hands back the cleaned content plus a report.

  • Works on plain text, Word and Google Docs exports, PDFs, images, HTML and Markdown.
  • Your wording is never changed — only invisible characters are deleted.
  • Use it on content you own or are authorised to process.

Plain text and pasted content

This is the simplest case and the most common one. Paste into the Text tab, press Clean text, and copy the result. Every zero-width character, bidi control, tag character and variation selector is deleted, and lookalike spaces are normalized to a standard space. Your wording is untouched.

One caveat worth knowing: paste the text into the tool directly rather than retyping it. Retyping obviously removes the hidden characters, but it also means you are no longer working with the original, and you lose the report telling you what was actually there.

Microsoft Word (.docx)

A .docx file is a ZIP package of XML parts, several of which hold application and custom metadata that can name the generating tool. Upload the file to the Files tab and the package is rewritten without those parts.

Clean the prose separately: copy the body text into the Text tab. Word will happily store zero-width characters inside runs, and a metadata strip does not touch the document body.

Google Docs

There is no raw file to upload, so work with the text. Select all, copy, clean in the Text tab, then paste back with Ctrl+Shift+V (paste without formatting) so you do not reintroduce styled spans. If you need file-level metadata gone, use File → Download to get a .docx or .pdf and run that through the Files tab.

PDF

PDFs carry provenance in an XMP metadata packet and in the document Info dictionary, and AI tools often add a producer or creator string. Upload the PDF and those are removed. The page content itself is untouched, so pagination, fonts and layout are preserved exactly.

PNG and JPEG images

Generated images typically carry an EXIF or XMP block, sometimes a C2PA manifest, and often a text chunk naming the model. Upload the image and all of it is stripped while the pixel data passes through byte-identical. Clean the image as the last step before you publish or deliver it. Running it back through an editor afterwards will write new metadata.

HTML, Markdown and SVG

HTML picks up generator meta tags and comments; Markdown can carry AI fields in YAML frontmatter; SVG stores metadata elements and editor namespaces. All three are handled in the Files tab, and the visible content is preserved.

Code and config files

Invisible characters pasted from a chat interface into source code are a genuine hazard. They can produce a syntax error with no visible cause, or a string comparison that fails for no apparent reason. Paste the snippet into the Text tab before committing it. The inspection report will tell you the exact offsets, which is usually enough to explain a baffling bug.

Use this on content you own or are authorized to process. Removing provenance markers to misrepresent authorship, evade an academic integrity policy, or defeat a disclosure requirement is not what this tool is for. See our acceptable use terms.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove an AI text watermark from a Word document?

Save or export the document, then upload the .docx file to the Files tab. The tool rewrites the package without its AI-provenance and application metadata parts and returns a cleaned copy. For the body text itself, copy it into the Text tab and clean it there. That removes any invisible Unicode characters inside the prose.

How do I remove an AI watermark from a Google Doc?

Google Docs does not expose the raw file, so copy the document text into the Text tab and clean it, then paste the cleaned text back. If you need the file's metadata cleaned too, download it as .docx or .pdf first and run that file through the Files tab.

Can I remove an AI watermark from a PDF?

Yes, for the metadata layer. Upload the PDF and the tool strips the XMP packet, Info dictionary entries and known AI-generator markers, then hands back a cleaned file. Provenance buried in unparseable object streams is reported rather than silently ignored.

How do I remove AI metadata from a PNG or JPEG?

Upload the image to the Files tab. C2PA manifests, EXIF and XMP blocks and generator markers are removed and the pixels are left untouched. Note that re-exporting the cleaned image through another editor can add fresh metadata, so clean it last.

Does removing the watermark reduce quality or change the file?

No. Text keeps its exact wording and images keep their exact pixels. Only non-rendering characters and metadata segments are removed, so file size drops slightly and nothing visible changes.

Can I remove watermarks from many files at once?

The current tool processes one file per upload. Batch and ZIP handling is on the roadmap; in the meantime the API endpoints can be scripted if you need to run a folder through.
